Lately, I've been having more and more difficulty finding interesting new science fiction that brings something truly unique to the genre. Marlowe and the Spacewoman is just what I needed.

Cyberpunk, crime drama, and comedy come together in a delicious blend in this book. Ian Dudley has crafted a world and plot that are thoroughly ridiculous, but has done it so well that you can't help believing everything you see. The characters are distinctive, fascinating, and just flawed enough that you just have to root for them (except for the bad guys, of course).

Of the three genres I mentioned, not a one is slighted or ignored. The highly advanced technology is integrated into every aspect of the characters' lives, and more than being a pretty decoration, it is often crucial to the plot. The mystery aspects are balanced perfectly; throughout the story, Marlowe is trying to solve two wildly different mysteries, and Dudley gives you just enough information to hazard some guesses, but holds enough back to make the ride plenty of fun. And the comedy? Sometimes it's an insane, in-your-face joke, and at others, you just have to laugh at the situations Marlowe and the others land themselves in.

All in all, a highly enjoyable ride.

Marlowe and the Spacewoman Ian M Dudley 9781442181540 Books Reviews

This one's hard to describe, but easy to rate. If you're looking for a fun, film noir, science fiction comedy with co-dependent toothbrushes (and let's face it, who isn't?), then this is your book. May be a genre onto itself, so grab this up, scarf it down, and prepare to stand in line waiting for the sequel! Yeah, it's that good. This is coming from a reviewer who doesn't really read/like comedy in his fiction, but the balance here is spot on and the author had me feverishly turning pages to keep up with the plot, while the occasional chuckle slipped free. Not since the original Tremors has a tale skirted the line between comedy and suspense so adroitly.

Must read.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Marlowe, a detective who loves reading and patterning himself after old detectives found in old mystery books, works for not so rich and not so legal people in a not so aboveboard way. But he is honest tempered with a great deal of caution. Currently he looks like Marlowe and has changed his name to match.
We get a crash course in what Marlowe's world is like as we watch him help a woman escape The City where they live. We see acid rain, common face lifts and talking dogs. But that doesn't quite prepare us for the murder of Marlowe by a bar of soap who is so sorry about it. Actually both Marlowe and the soap are sorry about it.
And so begins Marlowe's investigation into his own murder. Unfortunately this work is interrupted by a call from his brother, the Governor, who hates Marlowe but keeps him around for the fun of it. He also finds Marlowe useful at times and this is one of those times. An object has crashed into the brussels sprouts fields destroying the crop, an act punishable by death. The penalty would be carried out quickly but the person inside the object claimed to be have come from outer space.
Because of a power play between the Governor and the head of the Ministry of Policing, Obedere, Marlowe must prove Nina the spacewoman really is from outer space. All the time Marlowe must walk a narrow line between the two men in charge, Nina, and whoever is trying to kill him.

MY TAKE
Man was that a fun ride! Yes, it took me longer than it should have to realize what the book was, but once I figured it out, it was great. The descriptions in the book alone are worth the read. I loved the characters. No, they aren't like characters that you identify with or love because they are so deep, but they are the kind that you can feel connected with in a "I don't want to see him lose but I really want to see what the next mess he gets into is" kind of way. Marlowe's world is so full of interesting items from spray on clothes, to cars that drive themselves.
The humor in the book is subtle at times and then full in your face at other times. I especially love how Marlowe figured out what weapon a stapler was and how it is to be used, having read about one in an old mystery once and finding one at an antique store. I won't spoil the surprise.

I MOST highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good science fiction romp. The farce may be a bit over the top but the writing skill of the author far outweighs that. Besides, if over the top was too much we wouldn't have had the Three Stooges. But be warned, this book is nowhere near the slapstick that those heros of the theater were. Consider this much closer to a Eureka type story. I loved it and want to read more.

I rate books against other books found in the genre.
I haven't had this much fun with a book in a while. Ian's dry humor kept me chuckling throughout.

The plot is cleverly wrought, and we're given just enough clues to steer ourselves down all the wrong paths. Marlowe's world, though supposedly over a hundred years in the future, is plausible enough to make me worry (here's hoping I don't live long enough to be subjected to codependent toothbrushes or singing food wrappers!).

Definitely recommend grabbing a copy of this book... and slipping it to any and all of your unsuspecting friends. They won't be disappointed.
I had no pre-conception going into this, but what I found was perhaps the most enjoyable - as in fun - sci-fi read since Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. Completely absurd at times, full of imagination, yet kept me thinking "what if this really happened?".
After reading this book, the only thing I could think was "Wow, I hope he writes more! And Soon!" This is a very fun book to read, and somehow it being on a just made it better.

In the not quite so near future, the world has been divided into city-states, and everyone relies on their PDI (Personal Digital Implants) for, well, everything. Even the soap can be sentient, and until nanobot technology was perfected, wealthly people had clones made of their kids for spare parts. It is in this world that we meet Marlowe, a private detective who happens to be a former clone of the current Governor, who is the son of the former Governor, who was killed under suspicious circumstances. You get the drift. But now, the Governor has a task for him, and Marlowe cannot afford to turn it down.

I zipped through reading this novel, wanting to find out what totally unreal, yet completely reasonable thing would happen next. Don't think you know the answers to the whodunnit though - Dudley keeps his true antagonist under wraps until the very end, and ties up all the loose ends before he gets there.
