Haven't we all wished we were so wealthy we needed to pretend to be a "working stiff" just to get away from our own success? For me Victorine's character, Steven Ashton, is the embodiment of a modern Prince Charming for the poor misunderstood Emily, a single mom with a twisted history. From the start, and right up to the last chapter, this book kept me guessing as to just who held the smoking gun. Which is always a nice change from the other easy to foretell story lines.

I found, overall, the pace was good and captivated my interest. Though, perhaps not a polished printed publication, this book certainly delivers a high return of suspense, entertainment, and yes, even romance, on a less-than-a-hamburger investment. One of the book's biggest assets is the ease with which the author paints the players. The reader quickly gets to know and becomes emotionally invested in the characters. One of the book's biggest set-backs is the fact that the story could lend itself to several more chapters and this reader felt the end was a little rushed.

All-in-all an enjoyable read and worth every penny.

Not What She Seems Victorine E Lieske 9781453648605 Books Reviews

I gave it three stars because I thought it was well written and it might not be the author's fault that it was classified as a thriller. But that's the only good thing I can say about it. Compared to the one harlequin romance I have read, the only difference between the two is the era this book is set in. Like another reviewer I rolled my eyes through the entire thing. The characters are no thicker than cardboard and the plot is contrived and ridiculously convoluted. Picture the following and you've read the whole book "sparks sent electricity...,"sparks flew...," and "there were sparks...." Which by the way never deliver the "happy ending" that might at least have made this romance drivel slightly interesting. I don't mean to knock people who like romance novels, but this little gem was the pea under my mattress; just not my genre.

Note to my fellow reviewers and please take this in the spirit it's offered; please don't rehash the entire book in your reviews, with or without a spoiler alert. This causes me not to read your review which might have saved me time and money.
Not What She Seems was a fun read that kept me engaged wondering what would happen next. By the time a presumably cold murder mystery (that did seem weird... why that was already cold) is re-heated and clues start falling into place, Lieske has cast suspicion in enough directions to keep you guessing as to "who dunnit". And there is more than one crime to solve. The last several chapters, intensity increases and I found myself shouting at my book, "No! Don't go in there!" or "Wait! Don't open the door!" Good suspense. Gave me the heebejeebies in all the right places. As a mystery, it worked for me.

As a romance...not quite as much. Steven Ashton, billionaire, is totally and inexplicably smitten by Emily Grant, suspect-on-the-run. I could never figure out why because we didn't see on screen interactions that would endear her to him besides the fact that she's beautiful. Meanwhile, there is every reason for her to adore him, yet she constantly pushes him away; her reasoning seemed flawed to me based on all she had seen of him. Their chemistry is strained when they're together, yet apart, they each pine for each other. I couldn't understand either of them.

Since I favor mystery over romance, I still give it 4 stars.
Not something I'll be reading multiple times, but not horrible. Some inconsistencies in the story but not so most people would notice. Biggest question I had was what is it about this girl, and then woman, that makes all the men fall for her? She didn't have much to her personality that made me think she was irresistible. Also, if the hero is going to be a billionaire, do we really have to know the exact figure? It was mentioned more than once, and even the money as a motive cliché line was used "$6.4 billion reasons."
Not What She Seems was a good easy read. By the time I was 50% through I couldn't put it down. It reminded me a lot of my two favorite movies, Pretty Woman and Cinderella. The author draws you in by letting you believe that if a woman with all the baggage that Emily had can land a billionaire then there is hope for the rest of us.

The characters are likeable. The author did a good job in throwing suspicion from one person to the next. There was anticipation of would Emily and Steven get together. But when they did it was a little anticlimactic. Sparklers fizzled but there weren't no big fireworks.

I found the ending to be VERY disappointing. I wanted more. The reader is left hanging high and dry. I thought to myself, that's it? Where is the wrap up; the epilogue? Did Conner get his dinosaur for Christmas. Did Steven and Emily move to Nebraska and live happily ever after? How did Steven's parents like Emily. I guess the writer wanted the read to fill in the blanks.
Steven Ashton is a billionaire from New York, looking for a place to get away from it all. Emily Grant is a single mother on the run from the law. A chance meeting in Nevada, and again in a small midwestern town is fateful for both. Steven finds himself falling for her, unaware that her traveling companion, Richard, is controlling her and planning to set him up for a scam.
At their paths continue to cross, Steven finally learns that Emily thinks she killed her abusive husband, and is, with Richard’s help, trying to elude the law. The more he learns, though, the more he’s convinced that she’s a victim, not a killer, and that Richard is a dangerous man.
Not What She Seems by Victorine E. Lieske is a chilling thriller about victimhood, and the danger of falling for first impressions. As Steven wrestles with his feelings for Emily and her son, Conner, and Richard falls ever deeper into the dark recesses of his tortured mind. A final, fateful encounter is being set up, that will shake their beliefs to the very core of their being.
Lieske plots a tricky story that will hit you between the eyes with its surprise ending like a cinder block. She lives up to her bestseller billing.
