This is more of a light hearted read than most suspense-but it's a good book. Annie is being stalked and also finds herself protecting her grandpa. With a little help she learns to thrust and open up to her destiny. This novel has a good twist. "Escape To Big Fork Lake" is also a good change of pace from the norm.
Pretty light reading, and quite predictable. The storyline was easy to follow, right to the mystery person! There were details dropped in a much too obvious way, that put a spotlight on the mystery. So for half of the story, you are reading for the romance factor of the characters, and wondering when they will see the obvious trail that you've already seen.
Also, some of the reasoning wasn't very believable... but like I said... this is light reading, and the characters are charming to read about.
The romance was a bit too corny, but the characters were charming and easy to like. The authors writing is very well actually, and I would be interested in reading more from her.
Cassie Miles returns with her latest Intrigue, "Undercover Protector." A vengeful criminal has been released from prison and he's sworn revenge against Annie Callahan and her grandfather, the judge who put him away. That is hard enough for Annie to deal with. The arrival of her first love, the man who walked out of her life without a word, is worse. Michael Slade vows to protect Annie and her grandfather. But what secrets is Michael keeping from her, and can she trust him to stay this time when she needs him most?

"Undercover Protector" isn't the best book from this author or the line but I did enjoy it the most out of this month's Intrigues. Miles has a strong voice and a pleasing storytelling style that will pull readers through from beginning to end. While there are a few rough spots in the story, I never lost interest for a moment. Although one big misunderstanding is foreseeable a mile away, it fortunately doesn't derail the plot like it could have. Annie and Michael's romance develops nicely, and the small town flavor is a nice added touch. Unfortunately, the title is a bit of a spoiler, since we don't find out the undercover aspect of Michael's mission until near the end. I still enjoyed "Undercover Protector." Fans of her "Captive Hearts" books last year won't want to miss it.
Annie Callahan is a cop. She is used to protecting others.

Drew Bateman has spent the last eleven years in prison and now has been released. Annie is attacked by a shadowy figure with a baseball bat one rainy night. Was this person Bateman?

Annie's grandpa, Lionel Callahan put Bateman away now he is in danger.

Well guess who shows up? Michael Slade, the teenage love of Annie's life, only he isn't a teenager any longer. Eleven years have past and Annie doesn't know Michael any more. He seems too secretive to her.

He claims to be a boat captian so she assumes that he has no cop skills.
Although we find out he had become one of the elite Navy SEALS.

The attraction is there but so is the distrust on Annie's part. Michael seems to lie to her constantly and he has secrets.
Annie, bullheaded as she is, does not trust Mikey easily but there is something about Michael that she believes in.
She keeps trying to be the leader or boss [I blush for her].

Jake Stillwell makes a couple of passes at Annie even though she is suppossedly engaged to Michael.
Annie also tries to throw her weight aroung the Bridgeport police chief, Derek Engstrom. Engstrom prefers to ignore her and speak only to the men.

This was a very entertaining read - a little on the light side but worth it. RECOMMENDED --M Of course the PMS was put off until the end. Loved the ending.
