When a mysterious mute, wood carver visits Maddie's village, she can't help but be drawn to him. Getting his attention is going to be harder than Maddie realizes. After her village has given up on him and deemed him an idiot, Maddie can't help herself and she wants to know more about him. Not one for words, this piercing green eyed, angst stranger isn't willing to give away his secrets. After a turn of events and an attack from an evil shadow like creature, Carver, as Maddie calls him, ends up being taking care of by her mother. During his recovery Carver begins to slowly open up to Maddie about what he is, and the danger she and her village are in.

Maddie and Carver aren't in-depth characters, but with the story reading more like a folklore, I felt I got to know them enough to understand them and the choices they make. Both are similar, as both are like outsiders to those around them. Maddie is one of the few younger people who live in small remote village and Carver has a dark secret that keeps him from getting close to anyone. It wasn't hard to see why these two felt drawn to each other. I liked seeing how the two of them became closer and learned to trust each other. I also like that the werewolf isn't like traditional wolves, but is more of shadow creature that lurks in the darkest places of the night during the full moon, which makes this creature dark and erie.

What I enjoyed most about Clare Dunkle's By These Ten Books is the unique werewolf mythology and it's beautiful setting. Set in medieval Scotland among it's highlands gives an air of mystery and intrigue to the book. Truthfully, the setting and lore are what made me want to read the book, and kept my interest through out the story. These key elements play just as big of a role in the story as the characters do, and really set the tone for the book.

I enjoyed this fascinating spin on werewolf mythology and I recommend picking it up. It's a good read. You can read our interview with Clare here

By These Ten Bones Clare B Dunkle Books Reviews

When I first read By These Ten Bones, it reminded me suspiciously of Little Red Riding Hood - the wood carver, the girl who falls in love with him, the werewolf curse infiltrating the town. That, thankfully, is where the similarities end. By These Ten Bones is a fantastic tale all it's own.

It stands out in the giant swarm of werewolf paranormals that have hit the bookstores recently for one reason and one reason only the werewolf isn't actually sexy. There is nothing attractive about him. The wolf won't protect you. He's not a nice, furry creature that runs around being adorable. He wants to eat you.

And I loved it.

I mean, sure, werewolves can be sexy. (Soulless' Lord Maccon, anybody?) But I'd rather have a sexy-human-who-happens-to-have-an-evil-angsty-werewolf-side. Not only is it refreshing, but it's angst-making. And I like angst. Angst is fun to read about. Or maybe I'm just weird.

The writing in By These Ten Bones isn't anything spectacular - I laughed a few times, and I managed to get pulled in, but it's nothing memorable. The characters are interesting enough.

One of the reasons I liked this story was because I was able to relate to Maggie. She wasn't perfect - not by far - and though she was attracted to the mysterious carver boy, she didn't fall head over heels for him, not at first. She got to know him and the more she learned about him, the more she liked him, until eventually the two were in love. (That's not a spoiler. Anybody can figure that out from the summary.) And I adored that. She did things that I would have done, and I respected her for that.

By These Ten Bones is an entertaining read that crafts realistic and likable characters. It sucks you in until you want to know how the story ends - and by the end, though I had it figured out, I wasn't sure if it would go the way I thought. (It did, but I loved it nonetheless.)
I really like Dunkle, but this is my fav so far. Great take on werewolves and I love the depth that see went into in studying the Scottish culture from that period.
This story had an interesting twist on werewolf-ism but on the whole it was a good book. Definitely for a teen crowd but entertaining enough for an elder audience. My only problem with the book was the abrupt ending but at the same time it worked for the story so i can't judge too harshly on my preferences ;) I would definitely read it again and recommend it to others )
I really loved the Hollow Kingdom trilogy by this author so I decided to read this book too. All I have to say is I am glad I did it was cute. I could actually play the whole book in my mind as I read it and for me that is huge.
I absolutely adore Clare B. Dunkle's work. Her story portrays what we often find in ourselves, our weaknesess, our passions, our worries, and the powers we have to overcome them and to help others do the same. On top of that message we also have a fascinating story of two young people who are joined together by their problems and their support of each other.
I would recommend to fans of Twilight and the movie Red Riding Hood. They all deal with heroines who are caught between the boy they love and the dangers it brings to their family and friends. The main character of this book tried to protect her village while also protecting the boy who is a werewolf. She tries to do the right thing even if it means risking her own life.
This book got me into Dunkle's writting. And I stumbled across Hollow Kingdom. IN the long run I became a huge fan. I display hardcovers of my favorite books around my room. Currently there are only five. Two of them are Dunkle books.

By These Ten Bones is not fantasy at all. It feels very real. Like this may have happened and Dunkle was channeling when she wrote this. The cultural references are very good, and I cen see the valley quite clearly in my mind.

I read books in cycles. Romance, fantasy, mystery, ect. And By These Ten bones usually ends up being last since I save the best for last.
